Dear Matheson Park ES Families,

The safety of our students continues to be of utmost importance at Matheson Park ES.    Throughout the year, we practice safety drills to help our students know what to do in case of an emergency.  ALL APS schools practice the following emergency procedures: Fire Drills, Lockdowns, and Shelter-in Place.

What is a Lockdown? A lockdown is ordered (by the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office, Albuquerque Police Department, or APS School Police) when a dangerous person is on or near a campus.

  • Here's what happens during a lockdown:
  • Bathrooms, cafeteria doors, office doors, and gates are locked.
  • Students are moved out of the hallways and into the nearest classrooms immediately. They must stay in those rooms until they are cleared to leave by public safety personnel.
  • Students and staff are kept away from doors and windows.
  • All doors are closed and locked to protect students and staff from the threat.
  • All blinds are closed. Lights are kept on.
  • Attendance is taken.
  • Everyone remains quiet.
  • APS has written security procedures for every school.

What is a Shelter-in-Place? Shelter-in-Place is similar to a lockdown, except that the students and staff are allowed to move around inside their classroom. They are allowed to have organized and supervised restroom breaks, medical attention, food, and water if necessary. No one is allowed in or out of the building.

The decision to go from a lockdown to a shelter-in-place will be a joint decision made by the APS Police Department, the principal and the appropriate superintendent. This decision will be made only when APS School Police have confirmed that there is no imminent danger to the students or staff of the affected school.  Students are allowed to continue their studies in a supervised classroom that is locked and secure. All students are physically supervised during a shelter-in-place.

The safety of our students to and from school is also a priority.  Below are some tips on making sure your children stay safe while traveling to and from school

Traveling To and From School

  • Map out with your children a safe way for them to walk to school or to the bus stop. Avoid busy roads and intersections. Do a trial run with them to point out places they should avoid along the way, such as vacant lots, construction areas, and parks where there are not many people.
  • Teach children to follow traffic signals and rules when walking or biking. Stress that they should cross the street at crosswalks or intersections with crossing guards when they can.
  • Encourage children to walk to school or the bus stop with a sibling or friend, and to wait at bus stops with other children.
  • Teach children not to talk to strangers, go anywhere with them, or accept gifts from them without your permission. Tell them that if they see a suspicious stranger hanging around or in their school they should tell an adult.
  • Help children memorize their phone number and full address, including area code and zip code. Write down other important phone numbers such as your work and cell phone on a card for your children to carry with them.

On the bus

  • Have your children arrive at the bus stop at least five minutes before the bus is scheduled to pick them up.
  • Make sure children know to stand on the sidewalk or on the grass while waiting for the bus.
  • Teach children to make sure they can see the bus driver and the bus driver can see them before crossing in front of the bus. Tell them to never walk behind the bus.

Thank you for your support and cooperation in keeping our students safe. If you have additional questions or would like more information, please feel free to contact me at 291-6837

The tardy bell will ring at 7:43am. If your child arrives after the 7:43 bell they will need to check in at the office and get a tardy pass to be admitted to class.

Children may be on campus no earlier than 7:30am, unless enrolled in Parks and Rec, and must be picked up or in Parks and Rec no later than 2:05.

Early Release

There has been an increase in the number of early student checkouts at the end of the school day.  When students are checked out early they are missing an important time of the day where teachers are getting together materials to send home and giving instructions and other necessary communication to their students.   We need your help to make sure you wait to pick up your child until after school is over unless you have an appointment that requires early checkout.  We will not be releasing students for early checkout after 1:40.  This causes a disturbance and confusion in the classroom right at the time teachers are getting ready to dismiss.  If you have changes in your normal pickup process please send a note to the teacher that morning rather than calling the office right before pickup time.   We do understand there are emergencies and will work with you on those.  Also, we are reviewing records for students with chronic absences and scheduling conferences with the counselor and principal with those parents of students who have attendance issues.  Thanks for your cooperation. Mrs. Harper, Principal

Report An Absence:

Please call the Main Office at
291-6837 ext. 2
to inform us of an absence.

Today: 5/23/18

Student pick up and drop off is in the parking lot, north of the school.  Cars enter from the northernmost gate going the direction indicated (west) and either park in the lot (if you plan on getting out of the car and walking on campus to pick up your child) or line up in the drive through lane closest to the curb.  No one is allowed to get out of their cars when they are in the pull through lane.  A parent volunteer or staff member will direct traffic in the lot.  A staff duty will direct the pedestrians in the yellow striped area when to cross the street.  Pedestrians should not be crossing the street in front of the pull through lane or the line of cars exiting the parking lot.   It is important to listen to those on duty in the parking lot so that everyone stays safe.  I appreciate your cooperation with these very important procedures.

Breakfast After the Bell

This year, all MPES students will receive breakfast AFTER the bell.  The first bell rings at 7:40am.  The tardy bell rings at 7:43am. Students will have breakfast in their classroom before beginning the school day.  There will be NO breakfast in the cafeteria. Students should not be dropped off at school before 7:30am unless they are in Parks and Rec.
